Everyone has some sort of secret that they have hidden. Can you figure out what it is? If you can stump a panel, you might win $1,000 and a dinner for two... welcome to I've Got A Secret, hosted by Bil Dwyer!
It's I've Got A Secret, a show that's been played for well over 30 years and had several successful revivals on many different networks and to some extent, it seems to work here.
The host and game play is top notch in this game because nothing has significantly changed with four panelists each being given 40 seconds to ask yes or no questions to find out what the secret is. Bil Dwyer I regard as one of the best modern-day hosts. He seems like the guy you want to sit down and have a beer with and shoot the breeze. He was that likable on DRC, on The '70s House and he does it so well here.
The set is beautiful, although it sadly does not remind me of a show that airs in 2006, rather it looks like something that aired in 1976. Again, the retro feel seems to work on this show as well. I really thought this was going to be a winner.
So what can go wrong? GSN tried for a more risqué I've Got A Secret by making all four of the panelists gay... including former MLB player Billy Bean, comedians Suzanne Westenhoefer, Jermaine Taylor, and it also includes one who I've recently learned has an uncensored radio show named Frank DeCaro. This is where the game play goes horribly awry. Most people do not want to hear the male derrier being referred to as the "boom-boom", and some of the comments go more than a little bit overboard. When one guy claimed he could break pencils with his butt cheeks, Frank responded with "If you hurt yourself, we'll kiss it and make it better.". The thing I always liked about past gay panelists like Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde was that their humor could be appreciated by people of all walks of life, regardless of orientation. That doesn't really happen here and quite often, the panel goes into the gutter to ask these questions. I felt myself requiring a shower after watching the premiere episode. Instead of trying to break the stereotype, these four dive into it head first.
The show airs five days a week on GSN at 11:30 at night, and seems to be a hit among classic game show fans. I myself may re-review this show and give a higher rating if they tone down the overtones which were just too much. People who live in red states will probably be writing many angry letters to GSN.
In conclusion, if you have some sort of special talent and can stump a panel, you might win yourself some money -- The question is: Can you hold your secret? I've Got A Secret -- this show was not a very good revival. I give I've Got A Secret (Two cats carrying bowls of rice and chopsticks out of a possible five)
