There are over 13,000 cabs in New York City -- how would you like to make some money while riding in one? Welcome to Ca$h Cab, a show that airs twice a day on The Discovery Channel. Unsuspecting people who normally would fork over money has a chance to earn cash, and actually, the payout is surprisingly high for a show like this. Host Ben Bailey drives the cab and asks general knowledge questions.
Questions right off the bat are worth $25, and are usually very easy in order to get the contestants comfortable. If a question is missed, one strike is earned. If three strikes are earned, the person forfeits all of their cash and must leave the cab immediately without money.
After a few questions, the questions get a little bit harder and are now worth $50, when the person gets closer to the destination, each question is worth $100. Also worthy of note is the "Red Light Challenge". a RLC is a question with at least 5 answers -- if all 5 answers are given within 30 seconds, $250 is added to the total. If the RLC is missed, then no penalty is given.
If a person is really stuck, they can ask for a "Shout out" which is to illicit help from either someone on the phone (a phone shout out) or off the street (a street shout out). Ben Bailey will actually pull over so that they can get a person off the street to ask them the question. The contestants may either accept that answer or go out on their own.
If the person arrives at their destination without striking out, the host gives them the choice to either pocket all the money they've earned so far, or to risk it on a video bonus question. If the video bonus question is answered correctly, the money is doubled, but if the question is not answered correctly, then no money is earned by the contestant.
The set isn't much -- let's be honest, it's the inside of a cab -- the only thing that you get is blue and orange lights, yet this surprisingly simple concept seems to work and it is kind of neat to see all the people of New York cheering when they realize they've won quite a bit of money. The most I've seen people win is $1,325, but I do know it's possible to score nearly $3,000 if you are good enough and that would be a heck of a payday for riding in a taxi!
This game currently airs twice a day, at 6:00 and 6:30 on The Discovery Channel. If you like the "On The Street" game shows like Oblivious, you will thoroughly enjoy Ca$h Cab.
In conclusion, the next time you're in New York, feel free to take a taxi. If it happens to be the Ca$h Cab, then instead of paying a fare, you might make a decent day's wages. I give Ca$h Cab ½ (three and a half cats carrying bowls of rice and chopsticks out of a possible five).
