Like Kyrieeleison said, a collector's item. Oh please, call me KE. Everybody else does. KyrieEleison's just too long to always be typing the whole thing out.

well, surprise surprise...there's no "The Carmen Tapes" listed in imdb. We're gonna have a hard time tracking down the actress who might be Katharine Hepburn's long lost granddaughter, a mom...or maybe a nun, gumshoes. Word up. That is quite the collector's item there. I don't know what the folks on Antiques Roadshow would say about it but you've got the Holy Grail of Carmen Sandiego stuff in your possession Leonia. Or maybe like the Holy Grail's redheaded step-cousin......

I believe it was used as a demo tape in the early 1990s or late 1980s. Note the company mark on the back of the box. The box seems to be in near mint condition. That is of course key to the value of...' And so on and so on.

I was asking some friends for help, and all of a sudden I started thinking of Julia Sweeney, formerly of Saturday Night Live fame... unfortunately, I can't find any sort of audio or video to post for comparing, but even if it's not her, perhaps it's a starting point. Just as the Player swore up and down that s/he would catch Carmen, I will quest to find this actress' name until an answer is found! Okay, I think I need to go to bed.

Leonia, how do you do it!? ;D
You always find the best Carmen treasures!
I wonder if this video was some sort of bonus thingie to be included with one of the old software games, but got scrapped at the last minute...?
Also, I heard something about a Carmen Sandiego board game a long time ago; maybe this tape is associated with that? (Like "Scene It," or something.)

Mmmm... I have a couple of photos of Carmen Board games.. and some friends that own it.. (sadly I don't) but none of them mentioned anything about a demo tape.. but then again.. if it was scrapped they wouldn't know about it... but.. if it was a scrapped product.. how did it end up on the internet?

Last time I checked there ain't no rule regarding the resurrection of old threads.
Up until now I didn't have a way to record VHS tapes to a PC, but recently my parents got the hardware/software to transfer old TV shows and home movies, so I took the opportunity to get this video onto YouTube.
It's been six years since I got this and I'm still no closer to solving the mystery. So here it is in its six minutes of cheesiness.

Well, that's certainly... something, isn't it. I had to wonder why Scar Greynolt looked nothing like his pictures in the games, along with everything else brought up previously. How very strange. Thank you for posting it, Leonia. It was... interesting. (And thank you for posting the Mais où se cache playthroughs as well! I enjoyed seeing them, and being reassured that I wasn't missing out on much there.)

This an absolute find! Thank you for posting it ^_^
It appears to be a promotional video. The woman in this vid is the same model under the Where in Time thread for 'The Carmen Sandiego Collection'.

The coat certainly does match what appears in the original Where in Time box covers, but the original PC version of Where in the World also features Carmen wearing a fur-collared coat, seen here: www.gamefaqs.com/pc/575682-where-in-the-world-is-carmen-sandiego/images/box-34455The video I posted also features Carmen wearing a completely black hat, seen in the picture I linked above. The cover art for the original Where in Time has Carmen wearing a black hat with a red band. Judging from the props seen in the video, one possible theory is that it was intended to promote either the original or the first remake of Where in the World: 1) There is a World Atlas on the desk, possibly the same World Atlas most copies of WitW would have come with if one were to buy it off the shelf brand-new in the 1980s (Laurie or Scott can confirm or deny this, as I was not yet born when WitW made its debut in 1985 and I would have only been an infant/toddler when WitW got its first remake). 2) The background PC shows an interface that matches the first WitW remake 3) There is emphasis on famous locales (but not so much history) 4) Scar Greynolt is a henchman in WitW but not WiT, and he is seen in the video Given that "Gypsy Rose Lasagna" is mentioned, I think this video was made either around the time of Where in the USA's development or its release. Interestingly enough, when I asked the Learning Company on Facebook about the provenance of the video, even they had no idea it existed!

My bad I meant the Where in Europe thread has a pic of the same women posing for 'The Carmen Sandiego Collection'. However the actual brochure came in the Where in Time box. I've given up on The Learning Company knowing anything else about the Carmen Broderbund products, other than the games. And even they themselves seem to reference third party sources. In all of the box sets there are no mentions of any prizes for capturing Carmen, however on the back my Where in Europe there is a dummy ISBN number labeled 'Carmen's secret code'. Hmmm..... Perhaps the Broderbund company might know something, I mean they still are in existence but mainly focus on typing and photoshop programs.

Interesting that ever since I uploaded that video onto YouTube I've been finding actual, relevant results. It seems like the tape was included with some school editions of Where in the World, and given the PC seen in the background of the video, it definitely points to the first WitW remake. Additionally, there is an article from the Newburgh-Beacon Evening News dated June 3, 1990, about the games being used at an elementary school in Newburgh, NY, and a viewing of The Carmen Tapes on June 8. While the article mentions Gypsy Rose Lasagna appearing in the video, she only has a brief mention in the clip I uploaded onto YouTube (the video clip in its entirety, I should say). Still a lot that's unknown about the video, but it's starting to look like The Carmen Tapes may have been a promotional item for schoolchildren as redhatladyfan suggested. Given the date of the article, it definitely predates the WitW game show.

That's really awesome! I think you should get a VHS and play it to see what it is. If you ever plan on selling it you will have to provide some type of description, and it would be fun to watch
