Hmm, I agree...I like the title of "Forum Favorites" for the challenge. Laurie and the admin team- is this something we want to make like a separate little section for on the forum, you know, it's own category? Maybe things would be more organized if all the challenge stuff- polls, links, submissions- were all kept in one place. Just an idea. I would be cool with voting or random draw. Both are fine with me- just bring it on! Ok, here's another question. Should someone be incredibly inspired and brimming with creativity, could they submit as many fanworks as they wanted? And I have another idea- "Time Travel" Let's bring out the ol' chronoskimmer again...it never gets old for me.

Yes, I can do that. I can set up a sub board in the Where on Earth forum.

Anita, the previous topics, 'orphan carmen' and 'boredom carmen' would make great themes.
Uhm... That's a very good question.
I think they could submit one fanfic and artwork each but more than that wouldn't be fair - in a sense that people would be overwhelmed when it comes to voting (or am I wrong?). I think that they could keep the other fanworks they wrote and email them to Laurie or Crimenet to host later.
That brings to mind another question - the maturity rating for the fics/art works submitted - should we follow the Manor's guidelines?
But then I guess if we do darkfics/artworks we can always submit them to Carli or Crimenet to host. But I feel that such fics would not be eligible for the forum favourites challenge.
Oh yeah, that makes me think of another question. If we post up the fics straight to forum, we can't review the fics to make sure they follow the Manor's maturity rating. So would it be better for the fics to be emailed first for review?
The timezone point for the deadline, I'm really not familiar with timezones so can anyone advise? If we follow American timezones that gives me (and anyone else living at the equator) an extra half day to submit the fics - yes! added geographical advantage! =)
I would love to choose the theme by a draw - it would really be challenging to write to a 'surprise' theme.
Yes, we could have one theme for art and fanfics. Maybe call it: Forum Favourites - August Art Challenge Theme: --
Forum Favourites - August Fanfic Challenge Theme: --
That's a very interesting theme =D
Got two more themes: - Doppleganger. What if characters switched bodies? - Wish. What innermost desire lies in a character's heart?

Time zone deadline is a good idea.
For the theme, I think we should vote on it, something that been done so far to start with? Also I like the idea of amnesia I found lots of fanfic on that, as well as on regret. But I didn´read anything about the childhood of any of the characters so far.

Well, the continential USA has 4 time zones in and of itself. Yes, I think a timezone deadline would be the way to go. Here's a link that shows all the counties and what time it is there: www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/custom.html?sort=1For fun...what time is where our forumers are as this post? Anita, Becky, Carli, DarkRaven, Erin, Kara, (me), Lio, redcrazy, Shelly, shesvile - 7:43pm Friday Innovator - 6:43pm Friday jag - 9:43am Saturday KyrieEleison, Leonia, ManekiNeko - 4:43pm Friday nytecat - 7:43am Saturday waschbaer - 1:43am Saturday I think it would be fun to have a random theme...but how to do that? Yeah, maturity of the entries is a factor. Hrm. I dunno if I will definitely have time to review everyone fic to give folks time to vote. Well, fanfiction.net is one option. I mean, they allow most levels of fics. I dunno about art though...

You mean we're in the same time zone? That's a very useful fact! I know in the US there's several time zones with different names (Eastern Time, Pacific Time, etc). How is this particular time zone called? About the maturity issue, I don't know, Laurie, you know the forumers way better than me but I think we're all capable of following any guideline or rating you decide without need of checking every entrie. Or you can always assemble a team of 2 or 3 people besides you who help you to review the works submmited. Anyway, posting the fics in Fanfiction.net it's an excellent idea. The Carmen section of FF.net needs a great deal of dusting off!!

Yes, I agree with Anita about the maturity issue and I really don't want to cause any unnecessary work to you, Laurie, or the others so if we put up a guideline post about what's allowed and not allowed, we can trust people to follow that.
Uhm... I feel that it would be better if all stories/artworks were posted here in the forum - easier because it's all at one place.
Thanks for the time zone link - will check that out later =)

You mean we're in the same time zone? You know, I forgot to factor in Daylight Savings before posting. *g* Between April and October, most of the USA is one hour ahead of what the actual time is. (Parts of the country do not observe this.) It's a tradition that was started so that farmers would have a bit more daylight to work with. So actually Anita, you're in a time zone one hour ahead of mine. (At least in the winter! It's called the Atlantic time zone here.) The time zone I am in is the Eastern Time Zone. Both are possiblities. I get that we don't want to hinder creativity but yeah...I wouldn't be sure in some cases what I could post. Then setting a section at the Manor for these contests would be a wee bit imcomplete...

Whew! So much to respond to....this thread is active! I'm not an admin of the forum or anything, but I did just want to share my feelings on a few things... Entry Limit nytecat, i hear you that we don't want to overwhelm people with too much to read. I guess my feeling is, there just has been so little new stuff lately...I don't want to discourage anyone from writing/drawing more. How about the rule being that you can only submit one story or drawing for consideration, but can still share an additonal challenge response in the same thread? I think that's probably exactly what you said..... Voting vs. Random selection I was thinking some more about this, and while random would be more challengy, I think for the first 2 months or so, we should take a poll to see what people are interested in writing/drawing. After all, we want as many people to participate as possible. Maybe we could set up a poll where people vote for say the 2 challenges that appeal to them the most? Ratings I also would hope we are all at the point where people can police themselves as to what would be apropriate and what is not for the forum. Correct me if I'm wrong Laurie, but you like to keep the forum at a PG-13 level, right? I don't want to discourage people from writing stories that are for more mature audencies...say R-level, but they probably should not be hosted on the forum. It's not up to me, but I would be ok with someone posting a link to an R level story hosted on a private webpage or fanfiction.net as long as they put up warnings as to the maturity level. Kara

Oh, yes, we do that too and for the same reason, but from October until March. We call it "Summer time" and so now we are using... well, Winter time. About the rating issue, what do you thing of a PG-13? Or is that too much for the manor and the forum?

Mmm, apparently Kara and I posted at almost the same time and we were thinking the same about rating! ^_^

Since most of the forumers are from USA, why don't we follow the Eastern Time Zone? This means the deadline would be 31 Aug 2006, 12 midnight. Kara, your suggestion about posting as many fanfics/artworks but only submitting one for the challenge is fine. The more the merrier For the rating, I like the idea of linking more adult stories rather than posting them here. For the random theme selection, we could number the themes in a list and then use a random generator like here: www.random.org/nform.html. So if we have 5 themes, we generate 1 random integer from the smallest value of 1 to the maximum value of 5. The number that appears is the theme we use. But if the majority prefers to vote, we can vote as well

nytecat- just to add on to your challenge about "beginnings," here's one I thought of- character's first or last day on the job. midnight eastern time would be quite convenient as a deadline... Kara

Some more ideas for themes: - The Apprentice A character takes another character under their wing or they are the apprentices
- Sacrifice A character has to give up something precious to them
- Childhood Expands on the theme - orphan Carmen - but can be used for other characters
- Retribution Couldn't help myself - sorry!
- The Rival Taken from the POV of one of the characters
- WOEICS? The Musical! Where the world of WOEICS? seems to be transformed into a broadway musical.
- Homecoming Whether spiritual or an actual homecoming.
- It Wasn't Me One of the WOEICS? characters are accused of a crime they didn't commit.
- The Darkest Hour A character faces a life-changing decision.
